Golden Gate names David Gill as 2005 distinguished alumni

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (BP)–Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary has announced that David Young Hwan Gill, pastor of Concord Korean Baptist Church in Martinez, Calif., is the 2005 recipient of the seminary’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Gill holds a master of divinity and master of arts in Christian education from Golden Gate. He served as a trustee of the seminary from 1995 to 2004 and has been an adjunct professor since 1995.

“David Gill embodies everything we hope to impart in our students,” Golden Gate President Jeff Iorg said. “As a pastor, evangelist and denominational leader, he has represented his church, Golden Gate and the Southern Baptist Convention with dignity and distinction.”

Moving to the United States from Korea in 1976, Gill started Concord Korean Baptist Church with six people. Under Gill’s 29 years of leadership, the church has grown to more than 600 members and has helped start new churches in California, Mexico, Nevada, New York and four in mainland China.

Active in denominational service, Gill currently is the second vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention and president of the Southern Baptist Council of Korean-American Churches. Gill also has served as the first vice president of the California Southern Baptist Convention.

The award will be presented during the Golden Gate Alumni and Friends Luncheon June 22 during the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Nashville, Tenn.
