SBC seminaries: #MeToo is 'wakeup call for the church'NASHVILLE (BP) -- Southern Baptist Convention seminaries long have sought to train ministers in personal integrity, but amid the #MeToo movement, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary President Daniel Akin said, they have "heightened the alert."
From Southeastern in North Carolina to Gateway Seminary in Southern California, SBC seminaries are training students and faculty to recognize and deal with abuse, reemphasizing personal sexual morality and offering resources to those struggling with sexual sin.
Southeastern has "raised the flag and heightened the alert," Akin told Baptist Press, "given the cultural trends that we're now encountering, given the technological world in which we live" where moral failings often are widely publicized. Read More
Seminary chairwoman: 'God opens the door'WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) -- Becky Gardner believed she would grow up to be a schoolteacher in Tennessee. But now, as superintendent of an award-winning Christian school in Peoria, Ill., and as a seminary trustee chair, she believes she is right where God wants her to be.

Jen Wilkin at women's leadership event: Be fearlessDALLAS(BP) -- Jen Wilkin encouraged women to be fearless in their advocacy on behalf of others and to fear the Lord above all else during this year's Women's Leadership Breakfast June 13 in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting.
Teaching from Exodus 1:15-22, the author and Bible teacher encouraged women to fear the Lord and to stand up for their sisters in Christ who need advocacy. More than 200 women attended the event.
"I pray that this will be a room full of women who will speak on behalf of your sisters with fearlessness," she said. Read More

Patterson attorney claims 'misrepresentation'EDITOR'S NOTE: This story was updated June 5 at 3:41 p.m.
FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- An attorney for terminated Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson issued a media release late Monday afternoon (June 4) defending Patterson against alleged "wide-spread misrepresentation and misinformation."
Hours later, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary issued a statement responding to the attorney's claims about documents from Patterson's tenure as Southeastern's president from 1992-2003. Also in response to statements in the release, current Southeastern President Danny Akin told Baptist Press institutional records indicate former student Megan Lively reported to seminary officials in 2003 that "a nonconsensual sexual act had been performed against her person."
Patterson has drawn fire for, among other issues, his handling of Lively's report. Read More
Patterson firing met with strong reaction, cancellationsFORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Following Paige Patterson's termination by a 12-member committee of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary trustees, reactions have ranged from affirmation of the trustees to defense of Patterson.
The seminary has canceled planned on-campus events in conjunction with the June 12-13 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Dallas, and at least two of Patterson's speaking engagements at ancillary meetings have been canceled. Patterson has not said whether he will deliver the convention sermon in Dallas, a task messengers at the 2017 SBC annual meeting elected him to fulfill. Read More

Akin to SEBTS grads: Great Commission is their bannerWAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) -- Living out the Great Commission in life and ministry was the theme of spring graduation at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
"You all know that this was the banner under which you entered Southeastern Seminary," SEBTS President Danny Akin said, "and this will also be the banner under which you graduate."
On May 11, 244 graduates received their diplomas from SEBTS -- 195 from the seminary and 49 from The College at Southeastern. Read More
