Mohler underscores 'something glorious' to SBTS gradsLOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Seminary graduates bear witness to the glory of God's reign promised by the birth of the Messiah, said R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, at the school's 222nd commencement exercises.
During the Dec. 6 ceremony in Louisville, Ky., 156 master's and doctoral students were present to receive their degrees on Friday as members of an overall 208-person graduating class.
In his address, titled "For the Earth Shall Be Full of the Knowledge of the Lord as the Waters Cover the Sea," Mohler said the graduates of Southern Seminary are part of a global movement that began in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. Women's support coordinator appointed at SBTSLOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- In light of challenges facing campuses about the place of women in those communities, R. Albert Mohler Jr. has appointed Garnetta Smith to the new position of women's support coordinator for Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
In comments about Smith's appointment, Mohler said it further buttresses policies already in place to protect women by providing a woman in a place of authority to whom they have direct access. Reasons for Christians to sing spotlighted at conf.LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Worship leaders and pastors gathered at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Nov. 8-10 for the Doxology and Theology national conference. Matt Boswell, pastor at Providence Church in Frisco, Texas, hosted and organized the conference.
The theme of the conference was "liturgy," and the main sessions highlighted the church's need to sing, read, see, pray and preach the Word of God on a regular basis. Each session highlighted one of those five liturgies in a 45-minute sermon and included dedicated singing time and short, 15-minute talks. Read More
Mohler elected VP of Evangelical Theological SocietyDENVER (BP) -- R. Albert Mohler Jr. has been elected as vice president of the Evangelical Theological Society, effective immediately following this year's Nov. 13-15 annual meeting in Denver.
Mohler was elected as vice president with no objections from fellow scholars at the 70th annual ETS meeting. He is the third representative in the last 15 years from Southern Seminary to serve as vice president of ETS, following Thomas R. Schreiner and Bruce A. Ware.
Schreiner, Southern Seminary's James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament, was ETS vice president in 2012 and president in 2013.
Ware, SBTS T. Rupert and Lucille Coleman Professor of Christian Theology, was vice president of ETS before becoming president in 2009. Read More
Seminary students urged to redefine ministry successLOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Success in ministry does not come from your abilities, but from the kindness of God, noted Noe Garcia during an Oct. 18 chapel service at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Garcia is an alumnus of SBTS and senior pastor of North Phoenix Baptist Church in Phoenix, Ariz., which was the home church of the late Sen. John McCain. Garcia attracted national attention this past August when he presided over McCain's memorial service. Read More

Mohler's 25 years at Southern Seminary celebratedLOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's trustees presented a resolution of appreciation to R. Albert Mohler Jr. to celebrate his 25th anniversary as president of the institution during a special chapel service Oct. 9.
A sermon by Atlanta-area pastor James Merritt and reflections from Mohler, who became the seminary's president in 1993, also were part of the celebration at the Louisville, Ky., campus.

Preachers in the New Testament era possess the completed canon of Scripture, but that shouldn't mean they rely exclusively on the New Testament when preaching Christ, Philip Ryken stated during the 2018 E.Y. Mullins Lectures on Christian Preaching at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Sept. 26-27.
Ryken, president of Wheaton College in Illinois, presented four lectures covering the foundations for and applications of preaching Jesus Christ from the Old Testament. The Mullins Lectures, named in honor of Southern Seminary's fourth president, represent one of the oldest endowed preaching lectureships in the United States, second only to Yale university's Lyman Beecher Lectureship on Preaching.
