    DULUTH, Ga. (BP) -- Georgia Baptist Convention Executive Committee members voted with a singular "yes" to a search team's recommendation Tuesday (Sept. 11) that pastor Thomas Hammond become the convention's next executive director.

    Hammond, 56, is lead pastor of First Baptist Church in Alpharetta and was president of the Georgia Baptist Convention from 2015-2017.

    "We wanted someone who loves Jesus, loves people, loves the church, loves making disciples and loves Georgia Baptists," said search team chairman Bob Jolly, pastor of First Baptist Church in Cumming.     DULUTH, Ga. (BP) -- Scott Barkley, associate managing editor of The Christian Index, will be promoted to editor effective June 1, the Georgia Baptist Mission Board's executive director, J. Robert White, has announced.

    Barkley, 44, in his 15 years with The Index, has served as production editor, web content editor and associate managing editor. He will assume the role of editor June 1, with current editor J. Gerald Harris serving as senior editor until his retirement Dec. 31. Read More

    DULUTH, Ga. (BP) -- Georgia Baptist Mission Board Executive Director J. Robert White signaled his intention to retire after more than 25 years in the position in a letter he read to the GBMB executive committee today (March 13).

    White, 71, announced his retirement would become effective Dec. 31, 2018, when he has completed 26 years as the mission board's executive director.

    LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (BP) -- Messengers to the 196th annual meeting of the Georgia Baptist Convention recognized J. Robert White on his 25th anniversary as GBC executive director, approved a $41.2 million budget and collected more than 34,000 backpacks for needy children.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. (BP) -- Messengers to the 195th Georgia Baptist Convention annual meeting approved an increased Cooperative Program budget of $41,000,000 -- 42 percent of which will be forwarded to Southern Baptist Convention causes.

    MARIETTA, Ga. (BP) -- A brand new Georgia Baptist Convention reinvented for a new era in ministry was unveiled to messengers at the 194th annual meeting of the state convention.     DULUTH, Ga. (BP) -- The Christian Index will transition primarily to an online presence Jan. 1, the Georgia Baptist Convention's newsjournal has announced.

    "Bowing to the pressures of an increasingly difficult economic climate with rising production and distribution costs -- coupled with declining revenue from circulation and advertising -- The Index will produce its final biweekly print edition on Dec. 24," the paper reported in its Sept. 3 print edition.
