  RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- Ryan Littlejohn of Wichita, Kan., attended his first Black Church Leadership and Family Conference July 17-21 after hearing a glowing report of the previous year's gathering.

  "I came because my pastor (Tarrance C. Floyd) and first lady (Jacqueline Floyd) came last year, and they just really, really loved what this place offered and everything they learned," Littlejohn told Baptist Press on the grounds of Ridgecrest Conference Center, the site of the annual event. "And they shared it with the congregation, and a group of eight of us came here, based on just what they said. We came and it's been everything and more thus far.   RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- Southern Baptist African American pastor Ryan Rice, founder and leader of Life Church in New Orleans, is experiencing the first Black Church Leadership and Family Conference of his 30-some years.

  RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- When Dianne Gordon returned home from the 2016 Black Church Leadership and Family Conference, friends observed a difference in her appearance.

  "Everybody was telling me this morning, 'Dianne you're shining, you're glowing,' and I really do feel like that," Gordon told Baptist Press July 18. "I feel like 'wow.' I'm good."

  Baptized a year ago at Wake Eden Baptist Church in Bronx, N.Y., the 52-year-old Gordon works fulltime as a registered nurse. She lost her brother to murder two years ago in her native Jamaica and is in the middle of a divorce. She also is pursuing a doctorate in education and leadership at the University of Phoenix.   RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- Appeals for pertinent action amid turmoil following the killings of two black men and five white policemen were issued July 12 during a conference designed to strengthen black churches and families.

  As more than 800 gathered at the Black Church Leadership and Family Conference July 11-15 at Ridgecrest, N.C., leaders peppered sermons and seminars with advice drawn from Scripture.

  Using the conference theme of LEAD, an acronym for launch, engage and advance into destiny, speakers used the biblical story of Nehemiah as a framework to encourage constructive action approved and empowered by God and not defined by individual and personal agendas, nor limited by human strength.
