La. pastor announces plans to nominate HemphillDALLAS (BP) -- Louisiana pastor Brad Jurkovich has announced he will nominate Ken Hemphill for Southern Baptist Convention president at the convention's June 12-13 annual meeting in Dallas.
A coalition of Southern Baptists stated their intent to nominate Hemphill via Louisiana's Baptist Message newsjournal Feb. 1, but no specific individual was identified as volunteering to place the former Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary president's name in nomination. Read More
Ethnic breakdown of Gaines' appointments releasedDALLAS (BP) -- This year's Southern Baptist Convention Committee on Resolutions may be "one of the most ethnically diverse committees in the history of the SBC," convention president Steve Gaines said in a statement announcing the ethnic breakdown of his presidential appointments.
The Committee on Committees and the tellers each include 16 percent non-Anglo members, said Gaines, pastor of Memphis-area Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn. The Credentials Committee includes a lower percentage of non-Anglos (4 percent) because Gaines tapped for the other three groups most of the non-Anglos who were recommended to him and willing to serve, he said. Currence to be re-nominated as SBC registration sec.DALLAS (BP) -- Don Currence, a Missouri administration and children's pastor, will be nominated for a second term as Southern Baptist Convention registration secretary, his pastor Phillip Burden announced today (May 8).
"It is my privilege to nominate Don Currence as registration secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention," said Burden, pastor of First Baptist Church in Ozark, Mo., where Currence has served on staff 25 years. Committee on Nominations seeks more diversityNASHVILLE (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention's Committee on Nominations says social media discussion helped reinforce its commitment to propose a diverse slate of nominees for trustee boards and committees when the SBC gathers in Dallas.
"The committee itself had a repeated discussion" at its March 15-16 meeting in Nashville "that our goal was to make sure that we increase the diversity of the nominees," committee chairman James Freeman told Baptist Press.
