DOWNEY, Calif. (BP) -- Harold Neal, 83, a retired airplane builder and bivocational pastor, as well as the caregiver for his wife of 66 years, has found "what the Lord wants me to do" in leading a Bible study in his garage for 15 years.

Says Neal, matter-of-factly, "What else could I do that could please the Lord? Teaching is God's calling. I can't do anything else. If I can't teach or preach the Word of God, I think I might as well go on to be with the Lord."

Through the years, the class, attended by 8 to 12 people each week, has studied much of the Bible verse by verse. Neal produces all the teaching materials himself, from detailed outlines of each passage to large charts, maps and timelines. Some students in the class have amassed literally years' worth of Bible outlines at their fingertips. Read More

But of the 40-60 nursing home residents who attended the services, 21 made a profession of faith in Christ as their Lord and Savior, and about 10 were later baptized at a local church.

That experience two decades ago helped spur Waldrep to add senior adult events to his schedule. Today, he and fellow Southern Baptist evangelists say they are seeing a steady -- and in some cases increasing -- stream of people over 55 coming to know Christ. Read More

NASHVILLE (BP) -- Increasing rates of divorce and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among some populations over 50 could raise challenges for pastors ministering to senior adults in the coming years.

In December, England's chief medical officer Sally Davies reported a 38 percent increase in STIs among Britons ages 50-70, The Telegraph reported. Meanwhile, U.S. researchers at Bowling Green State University say the divorce rate for Americans 50 and older has doubled since 1990 even though the overall divorce rate remained essentially unchanged.
