    NASHVILLE (BP) -- As Joe Wright Jr. and his wife Pennie worshiped with a Southern Baptist congregation of 12 members in the Tennessee Delta just a few weeks ago, the pastor's participation was noticeable.

  • NAAF to 'fill the gap' in state conv. church training

    RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- Through a new initiative of the National African American Fellowship of the Southern Baptist Convention, consultants are available to help state conventions train church staff in discipleship, evangelism, missions and community ministries.

    NAAF's African American Ministry Assist Team (AAMAT) is designed to fill Southern Baptist resource gaps that NAAF said are widening for the nearly 4,000 African American churches in the SBC.

    RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- An original arrangement of "Blessed Assurance" at the 2018 Black Church Leadership and Family Conference culminated in a musical round of three different phrases sung in unison, harmonizing the word "assurance" at the same time.

    "Oh what a blessed assurance." "Blessed assurance, this is my song." "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine," sang the Whosoever Will Choir comprised of volunteers attending the conference.

    Arranger, worship pastor and recording artist Joe Pace, who serves under senior pastor H.B. Charles Jr. at Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., describes his arrangement as putting a "little spin" on the classic Fannie Crosby hymn. Read More

    RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- Race is not the issue of Black Church Leadership and Family Conference, leaders told Baptist Press upon the 25th anniversary of the event described as the largest gathering of African Americans in the Southern Baptist Convention.

    RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- Pastors leading U.S. Virgin Island churches still recovering from devastating 2017 hurricanes are receiving new stateside ministry partners as another hurricane season threatens.

    Seven pastors leading the only Southern Baptist congregations on St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas are networking with stateside leaders as guests of the 2018 Black Church Leadership and Family Conference at Ridgecrest Conference Center through July 21.

    "It has been the worst year, and yet it has been the best year," Reginald Joseph, pastor of Cruz Bay Baptist Church on St. John, said at a July 17 networking event. "The hurricane [Maria] has done a number on us, but God has blessed us." Read More

    RIDGECREST, N.C. (BP) -- Ryan Littlejohn of Wichita, Kan., attended his first Black Church Leadership and Family Conference July 17-21 after hearing a glowing report of the previous year's gathering.

    "I came because my pastor (Tarrance C. Floyd) and first lady (Jacqueline Floyd) came last year, and they just really, really loved what this place offered and everything they learned," Littlejohn told Baptist Press on the grounds of Ridgecrest Conference Center, the site of the annual event. "And they shared it with the congregation, and a group of eight of us came here, based on just what they said. We came and it's been everything and more thus far.
