  • William Carey reopens amid campus tornado recovery

    HATTIESBURG, Miss. (BP) -- Students will return to William Carey University on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18 and 19, with spring classes slated to begin Monday, Feb. 20, following an EF3 tornado that tore through the campus Jan. 21.

    Valerie Bridgeforth, director of student services, toured the various dormitories slated to reopen and was impressed with the progress that has been made. "It really does look and feel amazing," she said Feb. 9 in a university news release.

    HATTIESBURG, Miss. (BP) -- William Carey University will move students back to its Hattiesburg, Miss., campus and begin the spring trimester less than a month after an EF-3 tornado damaged nearly all of its 30 buildings Jan. 21.

    Five buildings will have to be demolished, according to a Feb. 6 university news release, but "several classroom buildings" and housing for 739 students will open Feb. 20. Read More

    NASHVILLE, Ga. (BP) -- As the Southeast recovers from a deadly storm system that swept the region Jan. 21-23, Georgia Baptists are mourning the deaths of an elderly couple who were members of First Baptist Church in Nashville, Ga.

    Meanwhile, the president of William Carey University -- a Mississippi Baptist Convention-affiliated school in Hattiesburg, Miss. -- said the campus "looks a lot better" following initial cleanup efforts. Read More

    HATTIESBURG, Miss. (BP) -- An EF3 tornado that ripped through southern Mississippi Jan. 21 in the wee hours of the morning damaged nearly all of the 30 buildings on William Carey University's Hattiesburg campus and left seven students injured.

    William Carey is affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention and has campuses in Hattiesburg and Biloxi.
