SBU upholds prof's firing, affirms BF&MBOLIVAR, Mo. (BP) -- Trustees at Southwest Baptist University have affirmed both the firing of a former SBU theology professor and the trustee board's commitment to the Baptist Faith and Message.

SBU prof's firing, university's theology discussedBOLIVAR, Mo. (BP) -- As a former Southwest Baptist University professor appeals his termination for allegedly accusing faculty colleagues of deviating from theological orthodoxy, the university has commissioned an "external peer assessment" to include "evaluations regarding orthodoxy" on the Bolivar, Mo., campus.
In the month since SBU's Nov. 28 termination of Clint Bass, associate professor of theology, online discussion has included a petition calling for the university's administration and trustees to "exonerate" Bass. As of midday today (Jan. 2), the petition had garnered more than 1,300 signatures and was accompanied by letters supporting Bass from professors at two Southern Baptist Convention seminaries. SBU selects Eric A. Turner as 25th presidentBOLIVAR, Mo. (BP) -- Eric. A. Turner was unanimously selected the 25th president of Southwest Baptist University on July 20 in a special meeting of the SBU Board of Trustees.
Turner of Pocahontas, Ark., will begin his duties as president-elect Aug. 6, and assume the presidency on Sept. 1.
Turner, 46, is a current college president with a wide range of experiences and a strong calling for Christian higher education. He worked in fundraising, academics and accreditation at Williams Baptist University in Walnut Ridge, Ark., for 17 years before becoming president of Black River Technical College (BRTC) in Pocahontas, Ark., in 2014. SBU expels two students in alleged off-campus crimeBOLIVAR, Mo. (BP) -- Southwest Baptist University (SBU) in Bolivar, Mo., has expelled two students allegedly involved in an assault at an off-campus group home unrelated to the university.
Viavia Manuma, 24, was charged Feb. 1 with one count of child abuse and two counts of first-degree assault in the incident said to have occurred in July 2016 at Home Court Advantage Inc., a residential treatment facility for children, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Henry Epenesa, 21, was arrested Feb. 2 and charged with two counts of assault and one count of child abuse, The Missouri Pathway reported. Both men were SBU football players. Read More
