Hawaii Baptists offer help to volcano victimsPAHOA, Hawaii (BP) -- With a volcanic eruption on Hawaii's Big Island in its third week, the state's Baptists are preparing to feed evacuees at area shelters and requesting prayer for the region's tourism industry.
"It's a very complex situation out here," Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention (HPBC) disaster relief director Darrell McCain told Baptist Press. Hawaii volcano blasts churches into actionPAHOA, Hawaii (BP) -- Amid a lava flow that has destroyed three dozen structures and the threat of a violent volcanic eruption, Hawaii's churches "are working in really neat ways," said Chris Martin, executive director of the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention (HPBC).
Congregations on Hawaii's Big Island have banded together to pray, secure housing for some of the area's 2,000 evacuees and, beginning next week, operate a mobile shower unit.
"The main focus of our people so far," Martin told Baptist Press, has been ministry "to the needs that are immediate. But our history and our practice has been a long-term presence with those that have been affected by disasters." Read More
Hawaii Baptists restructure budget, urge cooperationHONOLULU (BP) -- Messengers to the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention restructured their budget and adopted a resolution urging churches to give through the Cooperative Program.
Gathering around the theme "People of the Word -- Celebrating 75 Years of the HPBC," 264 messengers from 70 of the convention's 151 churches met Nov. 9-10 at Hawaii Baptist Academy in Honolulu. Asia churches forming Hawaii Pacific assoc.
KIHEI, Maui (BP) -- Five churches in South Korea and Japan are working to establish a new association of Baptist churches within the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention.
The churches voiced their intentions at the HPBC annual meeting, Hawaii Pacific Baptist executive director Chris Martin told Baptist Press. The churches are already aligned with and supporting Hawaii Pacific convention work, he said, but want to officially organize an association across the Pacific Ocean. Read More
