EC disfellowships Ga. church, honors MohlerDALLAS (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee has disfellowshiped a Georgia church for alleged "intentional discriminatory acts toward individuals based solely on the color of their skin," according to a recommendation adopted at the EC's June 11 meeting in Dallas.
The EC also honored R. Albert Mohler Jr. for serving 25 years as president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, elected a slate of officers led by chairman Mike Stone of Georgia and heard a report from the EC presidential search committee. Read More

EC search committee elects officers, requests prayerNASHVILLE (BP) -- The presidential search committee elected yesterday (April 17) to nominate the next chief executive of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee used its first meeting to select officers and begin laying groundwork in prayer to receive recommendations.
"In a few weeks we will be releasing an email address through which we will be receiving recommendations," said search committee chairman Steve Swofford, pastor of First Baptist Church in Rockwall, Texas. Greear, Hemphill rally prayer, civility amid transitionsNASHVILLE (BP) -- Amid two Southern Baptist Convention entity leadership searches and upcoming national SBC elections, both SBC presidential candidates have issued a joint call for prayer, grace and civility.
J.D. Jimmy Draper named Executive Committee ambassadorNASHVILLE (BP) -- Jimmy Draper, former president of the Southern Baptist Convention and president emeritus of LifeWay Christian Resources, has been named "EC Ambassador" by D. August Boto, interim president of the SBC Executive Committee.
Draper, who has maintained an active speaking schedule since retiring from LifeWay in 2006, is "someone for whom no introduction or explanation need be given," Boto said in an April 9 announcement. EC exec. VP Augie Boto named interim presidentNASHVILLE (BP) -- D. August (Augie) Boto has been named interim president of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee.
Meeting in Nashville April 4, the EC officers acted according to EC Bylaw 6 in tapping Boto for leadership following the March 27 retirement of former EC President Frank S. Page, who cited a "personal failing" in announcing his immediate departure.
The EC's five officers also granted Boto "the option to appoint an interim EC presidential ambassador during this period of transition to assist him in fulfilling the many representative functions that fall to the office of president," EC chairman Stephen Rummage said in a statement to Baptist Press.
