Wildfire skirts CA church, pastor shares scary moments
VENTURA, Calif. (BP) -- When the massive Thomas wildfire rushed the boundaries of Springs of Life Baptist Church in Ventura, Calif., Dec. 5, pastor Doug Jones was onsite with firefighters and others working to save the church, nearby homes and livestock.Screen capture from ReutersJones described the "terrifying" scene to Baptist Press today (Dec. 8). Calif. Baptists elect Bill Agee executive director
FRESNO, Calif. (BP) -- Bill Agee has been elected as executive director of the California Southern Baptist Convention Executive Board.The 64-year-old minister of church planting and revitalization at First Baptist Church in Woodstock, Ga., was elected to the position today (May 11) by the board. His election culminated a yearlong search replacing Fermín A. Whittaker, who retired Feb. 28 after serving 22 years. Agee will begin his new duties June 1. Read More

WEST SACRAMENTO (BP) -- Messengers to the 2016 California Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting celebrated the 22-year tenure of the CSBC executive director, elected a new slate of officers and approved a 2017 budget during their 76th session that celebrated "Generations Reaching Generations."Held at Russian Baptist Church in West Sacramento Oct. 25-26, the gathering featured a number of CSBC and Southern Baptist Convention entities recognizing Fermín A. Calif. leader Fermín Whittaker to retire
FRESNO, Calif. (BP) -- Fermín A. Whittaker, executive director of California Southern Baptist Convention since 1995, announced May 13 he will retire next February upon completing 22 years of service.In his announcement to the CSBC Executive Board during its regular spring meeting, Whittaker said that since his early call to ministry "I have known the blessings of being a servant of God. I find it amazing that God could take a stuttering kid like me [to be] a pastor of His church." Read More
