Food pantry keeps going as coal industry strugglesWHITESBURG, Ky. -- A middle-aged woman rushes through the door of the Letcher County Food Pantry just before closing time.
"I thought I was too late," she says, with obvious relief. "I really need my box this month."
She's not the only one.
"We have a lot of people who will tell us, 'There's no food in my pantry; I have nothing to eat,'" said Vicki Holbrook, co-director of the Letcher County Food Pantry in Whitesburg, Ky. "If not for what we do here, we'd have a lot more people going hungry in Letcher County." Read More
Appalachian students receive 30,000 school backpacks
ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- Weeks after the holidays, backpacks filled with school supplies given by Southern Baptist churches continue to bless students in Appalachia.
Teams from Appalachian Regional Ministry (ARM) traveled all along the East Coast in December to deliver Christmas backpacks to 30,461 students in all grade levels. After receiving a backpack, the students had the opportunity to listen to a Gospel presentation, resulting in 701 salvation decisions. Read More
