Purpose-driven preachers
Jerry Falwell introduces Rick Warren to attendees of the first ever East Coast Purpose-Driven Conference held on the campus of Liberty University this week (Oct. 5–8). The conference emphasizes that a church does not have to change its biblical message when it uses innovative methods for reaching the lost. About 13,000 ministers, including the entire student body of Liberty University, are being trained in purpose-driven church health techniques that encourage churches to maintain a balance between worship, fellowship, discipleship, service, and evangelism.
Falwell is the pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia and Warren is pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California. Warren credits Falwell with encouraging him in the ministry when the California pastor was struggling as a teenager with his call to ministry. Warren’s book, “The Purpose-Driven Life,” has sold 7.5 million copies and is being used in a 40 Day emphasis by churches across the country to bring their members into a closer walk with God.

West Coast worship
Saddleback Church Worship Leader Rick Muchow leads attendees in singing at the Purpose-Driven Church Conference held at Liberty University this week (Oct. 5-8). He says worship is a lifestyle and encouraged those called to a worship ministry to get involved in the local church. “It’s there that you develop a heart for people.” Muchow’s CD, “West Coast Worship,” is beginning to receive airplay on contemporary Christian music stations. by Susan Whitley

Bring them in
"Bring them in … Build them up … Train them for … Send them out!" is a slogan Rick Warren taught over 13,000 ministers and students this week (Oct. 5-8) during SuperConference 2003 at Liberty University. Warren says church growth is not dependent on a church's size, location, or worship style, rather it requires a healthy balance between the five basic purposes of worship, ministry, evangelism, fellowship, and discipleship. Warren is pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California and author of the N.Y. Times bestseller ‘The Purpose-Driven Life.” by Michael Troxel

Purpose-driven preachers
Jerry Falwell and Rick Warren change their traditional dress during the first ever East Coast Purpose-Driven Conference held on the campus of Liberty University Oct. 5-8. Warren typically wears a Hawaiian shirt into the pulpit and Falwell joked that he even wears a suit to the beach. Warren credits Falwell with encouraging him to stay the course when he was struggling with his call to ministry, and Falwell told the 13,000 ministers at the conference that he believed Warren and his purpose-driven model were anointed for 21st Century ministry. The conference emphasized that a church does not have to change its biblical message in order to use innovative methods for reaching the lost. Falwell is the pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, and Warren is pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California. Warren's book, "The Purpose-Driven Life," has sold 7.5 million copies and is being used in 40 Day emphases by churches across the country to bring their members into a closer walk with God. by Todd Hunley
