    ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP) -- After Hurricane Maria knocked power out for nearly the entire population of Puerto Rico, the island's infrastructure is devastated and initial reports estimate that it will take months before services can be completely restored.

    On Thursday afternoon (Sept. 21), FEMA officials sought to organize a response in Puerto Rico with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) as well as American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Read More

  • As Harvey loomed, church prepared for town's needs

    HUFFMAN, Texas (BP) -- Soon after Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Texas coast, pastor Mike Martin of First Baptist Church in Huffman made several visits around town, located 30 miles northeast of Houston, before the heavy rains hit the area.

    He stopped at the local volunteer fire department and told them the church was available if they needed help. Within an hour, they contacted him and asked if the church could be used as a shelter. Read More

  • Students, DR join forces for campus outreach

    JOHNSON CITY (BP) -- In the nearly three years Jonathan Chapman has served as Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) director at East Tennessee State University he has worked hard to gain credibility among administration and staff.

    Shortly after he arrived, he learned that some people even thought the BCM had closed. One administrator said "we didn't know you were still around," Chapman recalled.

    Since that day the BCM "has been pouring" itself into the campus, Chapman said. Read More

    BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (BP) -- The first time Keith Getty sat down to write the melody for a new hymn, he penned the now-classic tune for "In Christ Alone."

    It's been all downhill from there, Getty said with a wry smile at the recent "Sing!" conference in Nashville.

    MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (BP) -- Christian filmmakers Carl and Angel Larsen are asking a district court to reinstate their challenge to a Minnesota law that could force them to produce media supporting same-sex marriage.

    The U.S. District Court in Minnesota dismissed the couple's lawsuit on Sept. 20 against the state over portions of the Minnesota Human Rights Act (MHRA), which bans sexual orientation discrimination in public accommodations and contracting. Read More

  • 'Remarkable' number of women reported at SBC seminaries

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- "A remarkable number of young women" are enrolling at Southern Baptist Convention seminaries, according to a report delivered this week to the SBC Executive Committee.

    Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson, in reporting to the EC Sept. 18, said female SBC seminary graduates are helping to fulfill a need in churches for "strong female Bible teachers." He attributed the increased number of female students in part to the publication of high-quality theological resources for women by LifeWay Christian Resources. Read More

    BIG PINE KEY, Fla. (BP) -- Professional athlete, sports analyst and native Floridian Tim Tebow thanked North Carolina Baptist churches in a Facebook video posted Thursday (Sept. 21) for their disaster relief efforts across Florida after Hurricane Irma.

    "I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for what you're doing," said Tebow, a former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida. Tebow now plays professional baseball for the New York Mets organization. "You've gone above and beyond, and we thank you so much." Read More

  • Rick Warren counsels TX pastors amid Harvey relief

    BEAUMONT, Texas -- The losses that are going to hurt the longest after Hurricane Harvey are the invisible ones, pastor Rick Warren told a group of Southeast Texas pastors at Calvary Baptist Church in Beaumont as he counseled them on how to help people recover in what could be "the church's finest hour."

    "If unbelievers like what they see in the mud-outs and all the stuff we're doing, then they will listen to what we say," Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., said Sept. 18. "Many times outreach to people starts with a hand and then moves to the heart and the head." Read More
