    PHOENIX (BP) -- Every Christian is a minister, Steve Gaines, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, said in his message to the SBC annual meeting in Phoenix.

    PHOENIX (BP) -- Messengers to the 2017 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting denounced "alt-right white supremacy" in a nearly unanimous vote Wednesday (June 14) after a tumultuous day of refusing to address the issue.

    It appeared maybe fewer than 10 messengers in the Phoenix Convention Center hall voted in the afternoon session against a resolution on "the anti-gospel of alt-right white supremacy."     PHOENIX (BP) -- Messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention proposed 11 motions during two 15-minute scheduled segments of the 2017 annual meeting in Phoenix.

    Messengers voted affirmatively on one of the motions, submitted by Kevin Ezell, president of the North American Mission Board and member of First Baptist Church in Alpharetta, Ga., to authorize the convention's president to appoint a task force to study how Southern Baptists "could be more effective in personal soul-winning and evangelistic preaching."   • Gaines reelected as SBC President, leads diverse slate of officers

    PHOENIX (BP) -- Tennessee pastor Steve Gaines was reelected by acclamation to a second term as president of the Southern Baptist Convention during the June 13-14 SBC annual meeting in Phoenix.

    He will lead a diverse slate of officers including Walter Strickland, an African American leader of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary's Kingdom Diversity Initiative, first vice president; Jose Abella, a bilingual church planter from Miami, second vice president; John Yeats, who has served as recording secretary for the past two decades; and Don Currence, a pastor at First Baptist Church in Ozark, Mo., registration secretary.   • TRUSTEES: IMB now on firm ground, Platt reports

    PHOENIX (BP) -- Through Southern Baptists' "faithful, generous and consistent giving" of more than $98 million to the Cooperative Program and approximately $153 million to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, the International Mission Board has reached financially stability, IMB President David Platt told the entity's trustees June 12.

    "That's breathtaking: over $250 million given from Southern Baptist churches for the spread of the Gospel among the nations," Platt said. "And as a result of that giving, I am glad to report to trustees and the broader SBC that IMB is standing on firm financial ground." Read More

  • LGBT protesters few, use SBC logo on flyers

    PHOENIX (BP) -- A protest that an LGBT advocacy group had billed as "historic" was hardly noticeable on the opening day of the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Phoenix, bystanders said. But flyers distributed by the group included the SBC 2017 logo and theme.

    About 50 people appeared to join in Faith in America's (FIA) protest asking the SBC to remove homosexuality and transgenderism from the "sin list." They distributed flyers and engaged messengers in conversation outside the Phoenix Convention Center before disbanding around 1 p.m., bystanders told Baptist Press. The exact number of protesters was difficult to judge, separated in groups of two or so and blended in with passersby, witnesses said. Read More

    PHOENIX (BP) -- Just one day after seeing nearly 3,400 come to Christ at a Harvest America crusade in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention 2017 annual meeting, megachurch pastor Greg Laurie announced his official cooperation with the SBC.

    Laurie, founding pastor of the 15,000-member Harvest Christian Fellowship based in Riverside, Calif., concurrently announced plans to hold one of his Harvest Crusades in advance of the 2018 SBC annual meeting in Dallas. Read More

    PHOENIX (BP) -- Comenzó el viernes, 9 de junio -- las resonancias de un despertar. Más de 700 voces adoraban en la Iglesia Bautista North Phoenix en Phoenix, Ariz., dando inicio a los eventos de Crossover Arizona y Harvest America (Cosecha EE.UU.) del fin de semana.

    RICHMOND, Va. (BP) -- La Ofrenda de Navidad Lottie Moon para las Misiones Internacionales ha alcanzado por cuarta ocasión el mayor nivel en la historia, al aproximarse a los $153 millones, según la información dada a conocer hoy (7 junio) por la Junta de Misiones Internacionales (IMB, por sus siglas en inglés).

    Había una baja del 7.7 por ciento en la ofrenda del 2016, la cual fue colectada en medio de las noticias sobre el recorte del personal misionero y de oficina de la JMI debido a retos financieros.

  • ACP: Iglesias aumentan en 2016; bautismos, membresía declinan

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Los bautistas del sur experimentaron crecimiento en el número de iglesias que cooperaron con la CBS en 2016, de acuerdo al último reporte del Perfil Anual de la Iglesia (ACP por sus siglas en inglés).

    Sin embargo, otras medidas clave declinaron en 2016, incluyendo la membresía, los bautismos, la asistencia promedio a los cultos y el total de ofrendas, de acuerdo al ACP compilado por Recursos Cristianos LifeWay en cooperación con las convenciones bautistas estatales.
