  • Billy Graham's Southern Baptist ties highlighted

    MONTREAT, N.C. (BP) -- While Billy Graham was widely known for working across denominational lines, he also was more involved in his own denomination -- the Southern Baptist Convention -- than many may realize.

    Graham, who died Feb. 21, spoke at 13 SBC annual meetings between 1951 and 1995, served as a trustee of two SBC entities, and, including references to two institutions and a professorship named in his honor, his name has been mentioned in every SBC Annual since 1951. Read More

    MONTREAT, N.C. (BP) -- The late beloved evangelist Billy Graham, who ministered to both the disenfranchised and the most powerful, will lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in a pinewood coffin fashioned by prisoners' hands.

    The Feb. 28–March 1 viewing will mark only the fourth time a private citizen has been so honored, and puts Graham in the company of a legendary list of 11 U.S. presidents and 20 esteemed leaders and others who have lain in state or in honor in the rotunda, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) said Feb. 22.   • Baptists share Christ during Olympics in South Korea

    GANGNEUNG, South Korea (BP) -- On an uncharacteristically warm day during the Winter Olympics, visitors to the train station were greeted by a number of different religious groups.

    The Mormons wore yellow vests. The Jehovah's Witnesses had their literature racks set up. Methodist Koreans were carrying yellow bags as they handed out literature.

    Among these were a group of volunteers from the SBC of Virginia distributing copies of the books of Romans and John in 24 different languages. Read More

    RICHMOND, Va. (BP) -- Besides Billy Graham's unprecedented impact as an evangelist in the United States, he also profoundly influenced international missions in a way many Christians may not realize, Southern Baptist international missions leaders said.

    Not only did Graham, who died Wednesday (Feb. 21), preach in person to large gatherings in more than 180 countries, but for 40 years he led in organizing international conferences on missions and evangelism that introduced the concept of "unreached people groups" that today lies at the heart of global strategy.     The 2017 edition joins annuals archived at SBHLA dating back to the SBC's 1845 inception. The SBC Annuals are a ready access to a wealth of SBC history and news, including meeting proceedings, entity reports, statistics, sermons, state convention information, and lists of staff, trustees and committees, said SBHLA director Taffey Hall.   • Boko Haram kidnaps 101 schoolgirls 4 yrs. after Chibok

    DAPCHI, Nigeria (BP) -- As many as 101 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists Feb. 19 are still missing after state government officials admitted to falsely announcing many of the girls' rescue.

    In an attack reminiscent of the 2014 kidnapping of 276 girls from Chibok, Boko Haram raided the town of Dapchi in northern Nigeria late in the evening, forcing students of Government Girls Secondary School and other residents to flee into the surrounding bush, Reuters, the Associated Press and other news agencies reported.
