NEPAL (BP) -- Radford Bagby* has long heard mountaineering referred to as a "selfish" sport -- it can be risky and expensive, and climbers tend to like to keep to themselves.

But Radford found the more he got into it, the more God put a passion for other people on his heart.

"I got my bachelor's in sports education, and we watched a lot of mountaineering documentaries," he said. "The people interviewed in the films kept talking about how the mountains represented certain gods to them, and I kept thinking somebody needs to go and share truth with these guys." Read More

WASHINGTON (BP) -- Two Southern Baptist leaders urged Congress Nov. 29 to act soon to provide a long-term remedy for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children.

Walter Strickland, first vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Travis Wussow, a Southern Baptist public policy specialist, in a telephone news conference called for a legislative solution as the deadline for action nears. The Trump administration announced Sept. 5 it would end a program that has given about 800,000 people relief from deportation but also instituted a six-month delay for Congress to act. Read More

BRANDON, Fla. (BP) -- With the theme "Eyes on Eternity," messengers and visitors at the Florida Baptist State Convention heard testimonies of the cooperative work taking place across the state.

Many were grateful for the disaster assistance that quickly came following hurricanes Irma and Maria while others expressed their gratitude for Florida Baptist Convention partnerships that led to ministry and revitalization in communities around the Sunshine State.

For the first time in the history of the Florida Baptist Convention annual meeting, the convention sermon was preached in Spanish with simultaneous English translation. Carlos Tellez, pastor of Iglesia Bautista Coral Park in Miami, preached a sermon encouraging all to place their eyes on eternity and focus on sharing the Gospel with as many people as possible. NASHVILLE (BP) -- Christians are just as likely to say that gender is determined solely at birth as are atheists and religious "nones" to say the opposite, according to newly released Pew Research Center findings.

Nearly two-thirds of Christians, 63 percent, told Pew that gender is determined at birth; while 62 percent of atheists/agnostics and "nones," categorized as religiously unaffiliated, said individual gender can change from biological sex at birth. Read More

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) -- It was a simple "yes" in 1987 that changed the next 30 years of Marc Curles' life -- yes, he did want that extra ticket to a University of Georgia football game.

"When I was in college, my sister was a year behind me, and her roommate's father was an official in the SEC," Curles said. "He sent tickets to his daughter, and they had a spare ticket to the game he was calling that weekend."

Curles took it -- he loved football. And he watched the Bulldogs, sure -- but for the first time, he was watching the guys in the black and white stripes just as much.

"I watched her dad all during the game, and it looked like it was a lot of fun," Curles said. Read More

Read More
