  • Death penalty affirmed by Calif., Neb., Okla. voters

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- All three states with death penalty-related measures on the ballot Tuesday (Nov. 8) -- California, Nebraska and Oklahoma -- affirmed the use of capital punishment.

    In California, a measure that would have repealed the death penalty failed by a margin of 46-54, according to the secretary of state. Nebraskans overwhelmingly overturned their state legislature's 2015 repeal of the death penalty, and Oklahomans approved an addition to their state constitution affirming existing death penalty statutes amid controversy surrounding the state's lethal injection methods.   • SBC Crossover in Phoenix adds Greg Laurie crusade

    PHOENIX (BP) -- As Phoenix-area Southern Baptists prepare for next summer's SBC annual meeting, they are praying that a new addition to Crossover activities could lead to long-lasting spiritual fruit.

    At the invitation of the North American Mission Board, Southern California evangelist and pastor Greg Laurie has scheduled his national Harvest America outreach at the University of Phoenix Stadium for June 11, 2017, which will coincide with Southern Baptists' Crossover efforts. Read More

  • Ohio Baptists adopt 50/50 funding of SBC causes

    VANDALIA, Ohio (BP) -- A 50/50 division of churches' Cooperative Program gifts to the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio was approved during the SCBO annual meeting Nov. 2.

    Messengers approved a 2016-17 Mission Ohio budget which moved the Cooperative Mission Program, as CP is named in Ohio, from last year's 59.25/40.25 distribution to 50/50 for SCBO outreach and Southern Baptist national and international missions and ministries. Read More

  • Miss. messengers adopt 2000 BF&M

    JACKSON, Miss. (BP) -- Messengers from among the 2,200 Mississippi Baptist Convention (MBC) member churches unanimously approved adoption of the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message as the doctrinal guidelines for the convention, during the 181st annual meeting of the convention at First Baptist Church, Jackson, Nov. 1-2.

    Messengers also elected without opposition Doug Broome, senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Natchez, to a second term as MBC president. He was nominated by Ronnie Falvey, senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Madison. Read More

  • 2nd 'Insanity' simulcast Nov. 13, DVD release Nov 21

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- More than 1,000 churches have registered for two simulcasts of the feature documentary film, "The Insanity of God." The first simulcast was Nov. 9 and the last is Sunday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Eastern.

    A DVD of the film on the persecuted church will be released Nov. 21. Read More
