NASHVILLE (BP) -- In the fall of 2017, Ricky Skaggs found himself in Texas with nothing to do for a day, after a church canceled his scheduled Saturday night appearance. He remembered a friend of a friend who lived in the area -- someone Skaggs wanted to meet after the man had sent words of encouragement for Skaggs via text messages to their mutual friend. So he made a few phone calls, and soon the country and bluegrass music star found himself in a stranger's home in Bertram, Texas.

After a brief exchange of pleasantries, the man said, "The Lord is giving you more fame to glorify His name.... [T]his is the year that you'll go into the Country Music Hall of Fame." Skaggs wrote the man's words down in a notebook and even recorded the conversation on his iPad.

The man made the prediction one year to the day before its fulfillment. Skaggs was inducted into the hallowed hall Sunday, Oct. 21. Read More

SUSUPE, Saipan (BP) -- Typhoon Yutu overwhelmed a U.S. territory last week, the Commonwealth of Northern Marianna Islands (CNMI), which is part of the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention (HPBC). Meanwhile, Southern Baptists have been in the midst of organizing a response.

On Oct. 24, Yutu reportedly swallowed the 67 square-mile island of Saipan, endangering the roughly 52,000 inhabitants. Saipan is the northernmost island of CNMI, roughly 3,860 miles west of Hawaii.

As of Tuesday (Oct. 30), officials were still working to clear roads and repair the airport, said Darrell McCain, disaster relief director for HPBC. Only military and humanitarian relief were allowed to fly into the island. Read More

  • Grow a healthy worship ministry, avoid 'war'

by Joy Allmond, posted Thursday, November 01, 2018 (3 months ago)

NASHVILLE (BP) -- When Mike Harland joined LifeWay Christian Resources President and CEO Thom S. Rainer a couple of years ago on the "Rainer on Leadership" podcast, he never imagined those conversations about music ministry would lead to writing a book.

On Nov. 1, B&H Publishing released the fruit of those discussions, "Worship Essentials: Growing a Healthy Worship Ministry Without Starting a War!" by Harland, director of LifeWay Worship.

"Dr. Rainer began having me pretty regularly as a guest," Harland said. "His audience is largely pastors. We began to talk about worship issues, and the podcast became a safe place to address those pastors' questions about worship ministry."

The audience responded overwhelmingly to the dialogue. Read More
