Southern Baptist disaster relief volunteers rush to aid victims of Hurricane Charley
ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP)--More than 70 Southern Baptist disaster relief units from 11 states had been activated as of midafternoon Aug. 16 to assist with cleanup and recovery efforts in southwest Florida in the wake of Hurricane Charley, the strongest storm to hit the U.S. mainland in more than a decade.
Mickey Caison, manager of the Disaster Operations Center at the North American Mission Board, said that about 80 additional chainsaw/recovery units could be activated as early as today, the fourth day of response following the devastating hurricane which is responsible for 17 confirmed deaths and billions of dollars in property damage.
“A lot of chainsaw units are ready to roll,” Caison said. “We’ve just got to build the logistics to support them before we move them out.” Read More
Churches gather for worship to give thanks in wake of Charley
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (BP)--Even as Hurricane Charley left widespread destruction around them, God's people gathered for Sunday services to count their blessings.

They began arriving about an hour early, according to the St. Petersburg Times, and as they stood in the church's parking lot, President Bush passed by in his motorcade. He rolled down the window, gave them a thumb's up and continued on his route to survey the damage. Read More
Charley delays man’s baptism but doesn't challenge his faith
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (BP)--Jim Schaaf looked forward to celebrating his baptism Aug. 15 -– publicly displaying his identification with his Lord, Jesus Christ. Instead, he and his wife, Joan, spent his birthday and what was to be his baptism day roaming through the deserted and disheveled property of First Baptist Church in Punta Gorda, Fla.
The Florida Baptist Witness visited the church property Sunday morning, Aug. 15, and found the Schaafs inspecting the damage in what they called "a daze" -- like most of the residents of the city which bore the worst devastation from Hurricane Charley two days before.
Although the main building suffered what appeared to be superficial damage -- with the steeple snapped off its base and laying on the roof, the church parsonage seemed to have significant damage, including the loss of a large portion of its second story. Read More
