    SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (BP) -- Two weeks after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, Félix Cabrera and his wife Denisse arrived to visit the island where he was born and deliver aid in the storm's aftermath. Cabrera thought he was just there to help in a time of need, but God was working on something more.

  • John Bisagno, pastor & church innovator, dies at 84

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- John Bisagno, an evangelistic innovator and longtime pastor of Houston's First Baptist Church, died Aug. 5 in Nashville following a battle with cancer. He was 84.

    During Bisagno's 30-year tenure at Houston's First beginning in 1970, the congregation grew from fewer than 400 to 22,000 members, Baptist Press reported in 1999. During that period, the church also baptized 15,000 people, gave $250 million to missions, relocated from downtown to its current location in west Houston and helped launch the Bible teaching ministry of Beth Moore.   • Thomas Hammond to be nominated as Ga. exec. director

    DULUTH, Ga. (BP) -- The search committee selected to nominate the executive director for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board has announced that Thomas Hammond, lead pastor of First Baptist Church in Alpharetta since 2013, is the individual they believe God would have serve in that strategic office.

    Hammond also has served in leadership roles with the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee and the North America Mission Board. The Georgia Baptist Convention's executive committee plans to vote on the search ... Read More

  • BGR ready when 2nd earthquake struck Indonesia

    LOMBOK, Indonesia (BP) -- A team trained by Baptist Global Response (BGR) was already at work on Indonesia's Lombok island when a 6.9-magnitude earthquake with strong aftershocks hit Sunday (Aug. 5), killing nearly 100 people.

    The team from BGR's Singapore office had deployed to the resort island several days before after a 6.4-magnitude quake had rocked Lombok on July 29, killing 16.

    ROME (BP) -- Pope Francis' reversal of Catholic teaching on the death penalty continues to draw reaction, with some Southern Baptist theologians saying the move contradicts biblical principles of ethics.

    MIDDLE BELT, Nigeria (BP) -- The mass slaughter of Christians in Nigeria is calculated genocide abetted by the government in the nation that is Africa's most Christian, cries a growing number of leaders calling on the United States to intervene.
