  • Pence thanks SBC for values, prayers, ministry

    DALLAS (BP) -- Vice President Mike Pence affirmed Southern Baptists for their gospel witness and then encouraged Southern Baptists to continue in that commitment, speaking at the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting on Wednesday (June 13).

    "What began more than 170 years ago at First Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga., has now become one of the greatest forces for good anywhere in America.... The Southern Baptist Convention has always strived to reach the world for Christ, and so you have throughout the decades. I believe with all my heart: Your faith has moved mountains, and your witness changes lives every day," he said in his opening remarks. Read More

  • J.D. Greear seeks unity, diversity

    DALLAS (BP) -- On the heels of an election many Southern Baptists believe was pivotal, J.D. Greear struck a conciliatory tone in response to questions about whether his presidency signals a sea change. He fielded inquiries on a range of issues during a press conference Tuesday (June 12) at the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting.

    Greear, pastor of The Summit Church in Raleigh-Durham, N.C., was elected SBC president only hours before, receiving more than two-thirds of the vote. Ken Hemphill, former president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and administrator for North Greenville University, was also nominated for the convention's top office. Read More

    DALLAS (BP) -- Convictions will "drive you through life, especially in the toughest seasons of the soul," Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias told Southern Baptists Tuesday evening (June 12) at their annual meeting in Dallas.

    Zacharias, president of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries in Atlanta, Ga., shared a message entitled, "Convictions that conquered the world." He explained the difference between convictions and opinion along with how convictions shape and mold people. Read More

    DALLAS (BP) -- J.D. Greear, pastor of The Summit Church in the Raleigh-Durham, N.C., area, was elected the 60th president of Southern Baptist Convention during the 2018 SBC annual meeting in Dallas.

    Greear will lead a diverse slate of officers including A.B. Vines, pastor of New Seasons Church in San Diego, first vice president; Felix Cabrera, pastor of Iglesia Bautista Central in Oklahoma City, second vice president; John Yeats, executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention, recording secretary; and Don Currence, minister of children and administration at First Baptist Church in Ozark, Mo., registration secretary.     DALLAS (BP) -- Messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention proposed 20 motions during two 15-minute scheduled segments of the 2018 annual meeting in Dallas June 12.

    Messengers debated then defeated June 13 a motion by Tom Hatley of Immanuel Baptist Church in Rogers, Ark., that messengers dismiss Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's trustee Executive Committee. The debate included comments from two current SWBTS trustees, a former convention president and a laywoman. Read More

    DALLAS (BP) -- Personal evangelism and tithing are imperative for reversing declines in key Southern Baptist Convention metrics, SBC Executive Committee Interim President D. August Boto told messengers June 12.

    Key statistics including top-enrollment seminaries and the largest Protestant membership in the U.S. can camouflage less favorable trends such as declining baptisms and a sharp dip in personal giving, Boto said. Read More

  • Pastors' wives speakers address ministry challenges

    DALLAS (BP) -- Amid growing awareness of difficulties women often face in ministry, speakers at the 2018 Pastors' Wives Conference reminded the audience they are God's "beloved" amid ministry that can be both "brutal and beautiful."

    Calling this week a "momentous convention," Lisa Harper urged ministers' wives to "stand, even when expected to sit, with strong conviction and soft hearts."

    "Misogyny or not, we all have to go back to what it means to be beloved," said Harper, a popular speaker and author of "The Sacrament of Happy" and "Job: An Unlikely Story of Joy." Harper is also mom to Missy, whom she adopted from Haiti in 2014. Read More

  • Sherri Pomeroy tells of life after church shooting

    DALLAS (BP) -- Sherri Pomeroy never expected for 26 people in her church family to enter heaven together when she and her husband Frank Pomeroy agreed to serve at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs 17 years ago.

    But on Nov. 5 of last year, in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history, a gunman took the lives of 26 worshipers, including the Pomeroys' 14-year-old daughter Annabelle. Another 20 church members were injured in the attack. Read More

    DALLAS (BP) -- Texas Governor Greg Abbott thanked Southern Baptists Tuesday (June 12) for their prayers and hands-on aid during times of crisis in Texas over the last year.

  • Hispanic Alliance welcomes J.D. Greear, new SBC pres.

    DALLAS (BP) -- More than 100 pastors and their wives attended the Hispanic Baptist Pastors' Alliance Tuesday (June 12), welcoming new SBC President J.D. Greear during a morning of worship, fellowship and a call to go beyond the church walls.

    Greear, pastor of The Summit Church in North Carolina, kicked off the meeting telling pastors about several areas he sees as important to unity and proclamation of the Gospel.

    First, Greear said, the Gospel must be what the churches unite around. Next, people of other cultures within the SBC need to be elevated to positions of leadership. As a convention there needs to be a re-focus on evangelism and a renewed commitment to planting churches at home and around the world, something he thinks Hispanics are key to as they are able to go places Anglos can't. His final point was an encouragement to mobilize the college-aged and next generations in their strategic places. Read More

    DALLAS (BP) -- Personal finance speaker and author Dave Ramsey, addressing the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting June 12, urged pastors to lead people out of debt by teaching them what the Bible says about money.

    "When you stand up in front of your congregation, you're looking at a large number of people who do not have the ability to handle their money," Ramsey, CEO of Ramsey Solutions and author of "Financial Peace University," told messengers. Read More

    DALLAS (BP) -- La Confraternidad Nacional Bautista Hispana de la Convención Bautista del Sur se reunió para su 29ª reunión anual con el tema "Revitalizar una visión evangelística".
