  • North Korea prisoners' release spurs hope for revival

CNN screengrabWASHINGTON (BP) -- The release of three American Christians from North Korea is hopefully an early sign of Christian revival in the Asian nation, Southern Baptist consultant and native Korean Paul Kim told Baptist Press.

    "It's bigger than just releasing the three individuals," said Kim, Asian American relations consultant to the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee. "It's much, much bigger, (which) history will tell later. I think there will be very exciting things happening."

  • Patterson apologizes for comments 'hurtful to women'

    FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Paige Patterson has apologized for a "failure to be as thoughtful ... as I should have been" in describing domestic violence and the physical attractiveness of women in sermon illustrations.

    Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, has been criticized following widespread sharing online of a video of a 2014 sermon in which he illustrated the Hebrew word used to describe Eve's being "built" from Adam's rib by quoting a teenage boy's assessment that a teen girl was "built." Patterson added that the girl's appearance was "nice." He also has drawn criticism for an audio clip from 2000 in which he expressed his views regarding domestic violence. Read More

  • Churchgoers say they tithe, but not always to church

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Most churchgoers say the Bible commands them to give. But their tithes don't always go in the offering plate.

    Half of Protestant churchgoers say their tithes can go to a Christian ministry rather than a church, compared to what is often taught by pastors and Bible study aids.

    A third say tithes can go to help an individual in need and nearly one in five say tithes can even go a secular charity, according to a new study by Nashville-based LifeWay Research. Read More

  • Ethnic breakdown of Gaines' appointments released

    DALLAS (BP) -- This year's Southern Baptist Convention Committee on Resolutions may be "one of the most ethnically diverse committees in the history of the SBC," convention president Steve Gaines said in a statement announcing the ethnic breakdown of his presidential appointments.

    The Committee on Committees and the tellers each include 16 percent non-Anglo members, said Gaines, pastor of Memphis-area Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn. The Credentials Committee includes a lower percentage of non-Anglos (4 percent) because Gaines tapped for the other three groups most of the non-Anglos who were recommended to him and willing to serve, he said.   • ERLC: Make religious freedom a priority in Africa

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- Religious freedom should be a priority for U.S. relations with autocratic regimes in Sub-Saharan Africa, a Southern Baptist policy specialist told members of Congress Wednesday (May 9).

    Steven Harris, a policy director for the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, called for the focus on religious liberty during his testimony to a House of Representatives subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs Committee. The hearing addressed the federal government's response to the increasing restrictions on religious groups, journalists and other sectors of civil society in countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.     DALLAS (BP) -- Southern Baptist Convention President Steve Gaines recommends casual dress at the 2018 SBC Annual Meeting amid Dallas' oppressive heat.

    "This year I am once again encouraging all messengers to the 2018 Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting to dress casually," Gaines told Baptist Press. "Summer temperatures in Texas can run in the 90s and men should feel free not to wear a necktie. Speakers on the platform are encouraged to dress in business casual attire. Read More
