  • 'Devastating' wildfires spur DR teams to action

    LAVERNE, Okla. (BP) -- Wildfires from Colorado to Florida have burned more than 1 million acres since March 6, killed at least seven people and led to Southern Baptist Disaster Relief activity in four states.

    In the Texas panhandle, five deaths have been reported and 325,000 acres burned, CNN reported, while Oklahoma and Kansas each have seen one death and 400,000 acres scorched. Colorado saw 30,000 acres burned, with an additional 6,000 acres ablaze in southern Florida. Read More

    ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- During Jacob Dahl's senior year at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., the civil engineering major had a "sitting-in-the-mud moment," much like the prodigal son. Though the Washington native grew up in church, he had somehow "missed the heart of the Gospel."

    "I came to the end of my rope in terms of morality and self-discovery," Dahl said.

    Dahl crawled out of the mud and into Resonate Church, a Southern Baptist campus church at WSU, where he professed faith in Christ and was baptized. Read More

  • Reformation's 'Solas' highlighted at NRB in Orlando

    ORLANDO, Fla. (BP) -- The five "solas" of the Protestant Reformation were highlighted during the National Religious Broadcasters' "Proclaim 17" convention to mark the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's 95 Theses.

    Tony Evans, senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, preached on "Sola Gratia" (by grace alone) during the NRB International Christian Media Convention, Feb. 27-March 2 in Orlando, Fla., with Erwin Lutzer, pastor emeritus of Moody Church in Chicago, addressing "Sola Fide" (by faith alone); Mac Brunson, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., on "Solo Christo" (through Christ alone); R.C. Sproul, founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries, on "Sola Scriptura" (by Scripture alone); and Barry Creamer, president of Criswell College in Dallas, on "Soli Deo Gloria" (glory to God alone).   • Steve McNeil new Indiana Baptists exec. director

    MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (BP) -- Steve McNeil has been named executive director of the State Convention of Baptists of Indiana after serving in the role on an interim basis since December 2016, the SCBI announced today (March 8).

    "Jeannine and I are totally humbled by the Executive Board's very affirming vote to become the executive director for the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana," McNeil said upon his selection. "Thank you for each individual's personal and touching comments as we together take on the challenge of reaching Indiana for Christ." Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Two Southern Baptist entities have combined efforts to produce a small group study on religious liberty at a time when the fundamental freedom appears to be both threatened and misunderstood in the United States.

    The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) and LifeWay Christian Resources announced the release of the study -– "Religious Liberty: How the Gospel Shapes Our First Freedom" -- Tuesday (March 7). The six-week study is available for purchase through LifeWay. Read More

  • 'Dirty Dozen' sex exploiters named by watchdog group

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) has released its 2017 Dirty Dozen List of companies most responsible for promoting pornography and sex crimes among adults and children in homes, libraries, hotels and other places.

    Amazon, the American Library Association (ALA), Amnesty International, Backpage.com, Cosmopolitan magazine, HBO, Snapchat and YouTube are repeats on the 2017 list, with the ALA and Cosmopolitan making the list the past five consecutive years.
