    BROOKLYN, N.Y. (BP) -- When Camille Mumford started attending Bridge Church with her husband, she regularly sent pastor James Roberson quotes from New Age advocate Deepak Chopra. The Cleveland native wasn't too sure about what she was hearing from Roberson and she wasn't sure that anyone in the church's Bible study would understand her.

    But she continued to attend the small group, known as City Groups, and learned the importance of discovering community, particularly when living in a new city. Within three months, she volunteered to bring food. Three months later, she started participating. Today, she can't imagine living in New York City without her Bridge Church family. Read More

  • TRUSTEES: IMB appoints 29 new missionaries

    RICHMOND, Va. (BP) -- Twenty-nine Southern Baptists were appointed as missionaries to the nations during the International Mission Board's trustee meeting Feb. 28-March 1 near Richmond, Va. Trustees also heard numerous reports and recognized 63 missionaries who retired or died within the past year.

    During IMB's Sending Celebration service, new missionaries represented churches that cooperate with 11 state Baptist conventions. The missionaries will take the Gospel to peoples in Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Americas. Read More

  • Christian bakers continue court fight

    SALEM, Ore. (BP) -- Christian bakers Aaron and Melissa Klein took their religious liberty fight to court March 2 after they were penalized for refusing business for a lesbian couple's commitment ceremony.

    First Liberty Institute defended the Kleins before a three-judge panel in the Oregon Court of Appeals, promoting the couple's constitutional rights to religious freedom, free speech and due process in a court session webcast online. Read More

    LYNCHBURG, Va. (BP) -- It didn't take long for Stephen Curry to start talking about Jesus when he stepped to the stage at Liberty University on Wednesday (March 1).

    "It's great to feel the passion for Christ that is here," Curry said.

    The NBA superstar visited Liberty in support of a sneaker donation initiative called Kick'n It for a Cause during a convocation at the Lynchburg, Va., campus. Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- LifeWay Christian Resources is rapidly expanding around the world to serve a growing church in need of biblically sound resources, leaders said at its first Global Summit, Feb. 28-March 2.

    "God is pouring out His Spirit on the nations," said Craig Featherstone, director of LifeWay Global. "LifeWay exists to serve the church in her mission of making disciples. And that promise extends to the ends of the earth.

  • Deadly storms damage churches, Baptist college

    OTTAWA, Ill. (BP) -- Storms in the South and Midwest this week left at least four people dead, damaged church buildings and led to deployment of Baptist disaster relief workers in four states.

    The storm system killed three people in Illinois and one in Missouri, with at least 10-15 injured in Arkansas, according to media reports. At least seven states were affected Feb. 28-March 1. Read More

  • TRUSTEES: Hawkins signals 2017 as 'Year of Innovation'

    DALLAS (BP) -- Organizations typically adapt by one of two methods: imitation or innovation, O.S. Hawkins, president of GuideStone Financial Resources, told trustees during their Feb. 27-28 meeting in Dallas.

    Citing the need to be innovative to continue to serve GuideStone's participants well, Hawkins spoke from Nehemiah in the Old Testament on how people of innovation must face up, team up, gird up and look up to achieve their goals. Read More
