    AUSTIN, Texas (BP) -- A federal judge on Jan. 19 blocked an effort by the state of Texas to strip Planned Parenthood of Medicaid funding.

    State officials announced plans last month to cut $3 million in funding, the final step in a long process to pull all government money from the nation's largest abortion provider. In 2010, Planned Parenthood centers in Texas received $27 million in state funding.

    NEW ORLEANS (BP) -- Abdu Murray was a devout Muslim who rarely encountered Christians who could defend their faith. His journey from Islam to faith in Christ began after meeting the few "annoying" Christians who could.

    Murray, North American director for Ravi Zacharias International Ministries, told of his nine-year journey at Defend 2017, an annual apologetics conference sponsored by New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary's Institute for Christian Apologetics.     HATTIESBURG, Miss. (BP) -- An EF3 tornado that ripped through southern Mississippi Jan. 21 in the wee hours of the morning damaged nearly all of the 30 buildings on William Carey University's Hattiesburg campus and left seven students injured.

    William Carey is affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention and has campuses in Hattiesburg and Biloxi.

    ADEL, Ga. (BP) -- Southern Baptists throughout the Southeast have started responding to a deadly storm system that reportedly claimed the lives of at least 19 people from Georgia to Mississippi over a two-day period this past weekend.

    Severe weather, which lasted through Sunday night (Jan 22) in the region, extended into South Carolina and north Florida. According to the Associated Press, 39 possible tornadoes were reported in the Southeast.

    WASHINGTON (BP) -- President Trump reinstated Monday (Jan. 23) a ban on federal funds for organizations that perform or promote abortions overseas in one of what is expected to be a series of executive orders overturning current policies.

    The order was among three the new president signed on his third day in office as part of his administration's plan to make policy changes in such areas as health care, immigration, trade and the environment.
