More churches seeing need for volunteer screeningNASHVILLE (BP) -- Nearly half of the background checks requested by churches through LifeWay's program with backgroundchecks.com reveal some type of criminal offense.
Most of those are minor incidents such as speeding tickets, but 21 percent of inquiries discovered misdemeanors or more serious crimes, LifeWay's Jennie Taylor said.

Renewed gay marriage ban in Ala. debatedMONTGOMERY, Ala. (BP) -- A Southern Baptist judge in Alabama is among the supporters of state chief justice Roy Moore's renewed order that probate judges stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
"I absolutely agree with his reasoning behind why [Moore] is doing what he's doing," said Nick Williams, probate judge in rural Washington County and a former Southern Baptist pastor. Moore "has every right to issue administrative orders when the court system seems to be in chaos." Read More
Hospital expels doctor over LGBT viewsBOSTON (WNS) -- After more than 10 years of tension and conflict over his hospital's institutional endorsement of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activities, urologist Paul Church lost his final appeal to the Board of Directors of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to reconsider the hospital's decision to expel him and terminate his medical privileges.
That appeal was Church's last chance to stay at BIDMC in Boston. The board's final judgment in December dashed that hope -- and appeared to confirm the extent to which social ideologies have infected the nation's medical field. Read More

The U.S. House of Representatives passed Wednesday (Jan. 6) in a 240-181 roll call a budget-related bill that would cut nearly 90 percent of federal funds in the next year for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and its affiliates. The legislation also repeals fundamental sections of the controversial 2010 health-care law opposed by nearly all pro-life organizations. Read More
Iorg hears heartbreak over same-sex marriageMILL VALLEY, Calif. (BP) -- "I'm a deacon," the man told Jeff Iorg, president of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. "I've followed Jesus all my life, and so have my children. Now my granddaughter has come home and announced she is a lesbian and is going to marry another woman. What do I do?"
