TAYLORS, S.C. (BP)--The Southern Baptist Convention meeting in San Antonio was a wonderful experience for me. Yes, it was nerve-racking in some ways as it was my first time to moderate a meeting of that size. Yes, there was spirited debate and discussion over a few issues. Yes, it was a physically and emotionally draining time. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful experience.

Let me tell you why. I sensed the prayers of a large number of God's people. Throughout this past year, I have been the recipient of the power of prayer. For that I cannot be thankful enough. I want to express, as best I can, my deep love and appreciation for Southern Baptist people, particularly those who have been praying for me and my family over this past year. Your prayers have been felt and deeply appreciated.

Philippians 1:5 talks about "our partnership in the Gospel." This partnership is one we all must cherish. We are not alone in the work of the Lord. I have been calling for unity across our convention. I will not back up, back away, or back down from that call. It is a prayer request of our Lord Jesus in John 17. It must be our continual quest before the Lord and in our behaviors.

I want to also thank you for your support this past year. I have experienced a tremendous kindness from those who voted for me and those who did not. I pledge to you my commitment that during this next year I will seek to glorify our Lord as I fulfill this second term.

I am well aware of my inadequacies and my weaknesses. However, I again ask that you pray for me. I ask for God's wisdom, endurance and discernment. I will continue to seek for unity among our convention. I will continue to call for a united prayer for spiritual awakening and revival. I will continue to work with our North American Mission Board and LifeWay Christian Resources on a true 10 year, flexible, multi-facet evangelism strategy to be presented at next year's convention. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this presentation.

Again, let me say thank you. I love each of you and pray that this next year will be one that will glorify our Lord and build up the Kingdom of God among us.
