As the country navigates a season of extreme turbulence, Ronnie Floyd, president and CEO of the SBC Executive Committee, plans to host a conversation on race Wednesday (June 17).

"A 60-Minute Conversation: On Race in America," featuring five African American pastors and spiritual leaders, will be broadcast live at 11 a.m. CDT on the Executive Committee's Facebook page.

"This is a time for all of us to listen: to learn to love and to lead biblically as men and women of God," he said, adding that his hope in considering the difficult issues "through the clear lens of Scripture" is to encourage further conversation among Christians, and a resolve to press forward together in unity derived from the spirit of Christ.

Along with Floyd, the conversation is scheduled to include:

-- Rolland Slade, senior pastor of Meridian Baptist Church of El Cajon, Calif., and newly elected chairman of the SBC Executive Committee

-- Charlie Dates, senior pastor of Progressive Baptist Church of Chicago

-- Kevin Smith, executive director of the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware

-- K. Marshall Williams, senior pastor of Nazarene Baptist Church of Philadelphia

-- Willie McLaurin, vice president for Great Commission relations and mobilization of the SBC EC

"We need to have ongoing biblical conversations about these matters," Floyd said. "Not seeing these matters through the blurred lens of our culture, but we need to see these through the clear lens of Scripture."

Floyd said he hopes to spur similar conversations.

"These conversations must be ongoing for all of us," he said. "They must happen in local communities -- not just convened by politicians or activists, but convened by godly pastors and local church leaders who want to lead with the truth of God in one hand and the love of God in the other hand."
