This week's Bible study is adapted from the YOU curriculum.
Bible Passages: John 15:1-4, 7-10
Discussion Questions: When you hear the word "remain," what kinds of images come to mind? How have you experienced spiritual pruning in your life?
Food for Thought:
We live in a connected age. Computers, tablets and phones allow us to connect to one another and connect to the world at large through the internet. However, all of these items must also be connected to a power source in order to function. But what about our connection with God? What should that look like? While we might not have a power cable to plug in at night, we do have a source of power. A healthy connection with God requires daily spiritual exercise that not only benefits us but also benefits others.
The Apostle John wrote about staying connected to Jesus, the source of our power and strength. He used an agrarian term to convey this thought to the people of the first century. He told them to think of their relationship to God like a grapevine. If a branch stayed connected to the vine, it would produce much fruit. If it did not stay connected, there would be no fruit. Some of us have no fruit to show because we are not staying close to our Heavenly Father. We spend more time sleeping or watching sports and cable television than we spend reading and meditating on God's Word. We spend far less time in devotional reading and/or study than what is needed.
In a shifting cultural context, it's more important than ever before that people connect, grow, serve, and go in their Christian life.
