NASHVILLE (BP) — Baptist Press, along with its staff members and correspondents, was among those recognized this year by professional organizations for achievements in writing and digital publication.
The Evangelical Press Association, for the third year in a row, has named BP its Award of Excellence recipient in the denominational (digital) category, the association’s top honor for online denominational news services.

BP won two awards in the Baptist Communicators Association Wilmer C. Fields Awards Competition, both for its coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro:
— Tim Ellsworth, a BP contributor and Union University’s associate vice president for university communications, won second place in the feature writing division’s “first-person column” category for his column “Cancer, Rio & Hope.”
— Ellsworth won third place in the feature writing division’s “series or package” category for the entirety of his work at the Rio Olympics.
Among grand prize winners in the BCA awards competition were: Gateway Seminary (public relations and development); Baptist Foundation of Oklahoma (interactive communications); Tennessee Baptist Convention (audio-visual communication); Mark Ira Hooks, communications director for the Collin Baptist Association in Fairview, Texas (photography); Seth Brown, content editor of North Carolina’s Biblical Recorder newsjournal (news writing); Harper McKay, news and information specialist at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (feature writing); and Union University (design).
Erich Bridges honored
BCA honored former International Mission Board global correspondent Erich Bridges by electing him a lifetime member at the BCA Communicators Workshop April 20 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Bridges served at the IMB for 35 years until his retirement last year.
The Workshop program stated that Bridges’ “stories brought to life the experiences of missionaries, local believers and unbelievers in a way that raised awareness among Southern Baptists and spurred them to increased prayer and financial support, facilitating the spread of the Gospel to some of the hardest-to-reach places on the planet.”
