Samford University and TAB launch ‘seemingly holographic’ version of the state Baptist paper

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BP) — Samford University in Birmingham partnered with “The Alabama Baptist” to bring innovative technology to TAB’s print edition beginning with the Aug. 27 issue.

That technology, called augmented reality and using the Aurasma app, was recently launched during an Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM) Periscope broadcast discussing the pros, cons and uses of social media.

Chris McCaghren, assistant to the president for external programs at Samford and developer of the augmented reality feature for Samford and TAB, said this cutting-edge technology added “a new dimension of content and engagement to your reading experience.”

All that is needed is a copy of any week’s TAB (print or digital) from Aug. 27 on and a smartphone or tablet.

President Brewer launches LC’s Board of Visitors
by Norm Miller

PINEVILLE, La. (BP) — The president of Louisiana College, Dr. Rick Brewer, announced Sept. 30 the formation of a Board of Visitors (BOV) for the college.

“Comprised of alumni, business owners, as well as other professionals and friends of the college, the Board of Visitors is an important channel of involvement and networking among distinguished citizens and leaders who will advance the college’s mission by assisting through planning, promotion and resource development,” Brewer said.

Membership in the BOV is a four-year commitment with annual gifts at four entry points: Board of Visitor, $1,000; Leadership Council, $2,500; Executive Council, $5,000; and the Presidential Council; $10,000.

To date, 40 have joined this venture.

LC’s vice president for Institutional Advancement Byron McGee said several local leaders have joined the Executive Council.

“Participating on the BOV means members will help refer prospective students to the college, help students find internships and employment, engage in networking for the college, and help develop additional financial resources,” McGee said.

“Perhaps most important to students and their families is that our BOV members are helping to close the affordability gap for a college education,” said McGee, who explained that all financial support through the BOV will go directly and exclusively to a scholarship fund supporting qualified students.

“I want to thank Byron for his untiring efforts and for introducing me to some of the folks he has come to know in his 30-plus years of service to the college,” Brewer said. “Without his knowledge and expertise, we would not be launching the BOV with such a level of success as we have enjoyed in just a few months.”

Brewer believes the BOV will have 50 members by the end of the 2016 spring semester, if not sooner.

Both Brewer and McGee have met with scores of people regarding the BOV endeavor and report enthusiastic receptions. “Several have joined on-the-spot,” Brewer said. “And there is a common spirit among all of them. They want Louisiana College to succeed. Their enthusiastic support for our vision of preparing graduates and transforming lives seems already to have been born in their hearts.”

Joining our Board of Visitors is “about so much more than a financial donation,” Brewer continued. “It’s about participating with students who are answering God’s call upon their lives, and helping Louisiana College launch them into the marketplace or ministry with impeccable academic training and a heart for the kingdom of God.”

Though there are numerous perks for BOV members, one of the most meaningful, Brewer said, will be experienced at the annual BOV banquet, where donors will “enjoy a meal and fellowship with some of the finest college students on the planet,” Brewer said.

“The entire Louisiana College family is grateful to these who have stepped up in support of students,” Brewer said. “These BOV members’ material investment will impact the lives of our students immeasurably.”

Brewer said such support “signals their buy-in to our goals of preparing graduates and transforming lives though a relevant, relational and rigorous liberal arts education that is founded upon a Christian worldview.”

“What these friends have accomplished is precisely what our vision states,” Brewer added. “Our Board of Visitors’ contributions epitomize the preparation of graduates and the transforming of their lives. This represents far more than monetary support; it is also ideological support, and for Louisiana College, that is priceless.”
