WMU’s Lee highlights missions, new nat’l president

COLUMBUS, Ohio (BP) — Wanda Lee, executive director of WMU, highlighted the importance of missions and introduced Linda Cooper as the new president of the national auxiliary during her report to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting June 17.

Lee reflected on the WMU Missions Celebration and Annual Meeting held at First Baptist Church in Grove City, Ohio, on June 14-15, preceding the SBC annual meeting in Columbus.

“We were blessed with reports from wonderful missionaries serving here in the U.S., South Asia, Africa and from our military chaplains,” Lee said. “What an incredibly blessed denomination we are with the quality of our missionaries leading and guiding our shared efforts to reach the nations for Christ. It’s a privilege to be a part of the discipling process of calling them out in our churches.”

Lee thanked Southern Baptists for their support of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, noting that nearly $154 million given in 2014 to support international missions was the second highest total in the offering’s history.

Cooper, a member of Forest Park Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Ky., was elected to succeed Debby Akerman of Myrtle Beach, S.C., who served as president of national WMU since 2010. Akerman was recognized and celebrated for her five years of leadership and service during the WMU Missions Celebration.
