Bible Study: April 26, 2015

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the MasterWork curriculum.

Bible Passages: Exodus 20:12

Discussion Questions: Why is the Fifth Commandment a difficult one for many people to obey? Does it still apply today? How can you honor a parent whose convictions oppose yours?

Food for Thought:

Parental authority is indispensable to a stable society. Through the ages, virtually all civilizations have recognized this truth. From the beginning, God placed mankind in families, establishing this relational unit as the building block of society. Parents were to be responsible for their children, and children were to submit to the authority of their parents. This natural law finds expression in the Fifth Commandment of God’s revealed law. It is no exaggeration to say that the well-being of a person, people or nation begins in the home — a home in which a father and a mother function together in fulfilling the responsibility to train up their children in the way they should go. With this context, beliefs and values are transmitted from one generation to another.

It is no secret that this “traditional” family unit is under attack. A variety of family forms are offered as viable and acceptable alternatives. The feminist, homosexual agenda, in seeking to legitimize itself, demands the “right” to establish a family in any way it chooses. The family is God’s design. He has established the coming together of one man and one woman in a lifelong commitment. Immoral associations between people of the same sex violate God’s law.
