Bible Study: April 12, 2015

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Bible Passage: Luke 24:19-35

Discussion Questions: If you met your favorite celebrity, what would you tell others about that encounter? How would that encounter compare to meeting Jesus?

Food for Thought:

In Luke 24, we find two people walking to Emmaus on the first Easter Sunday. They are joined by a third person who joins their dialogue. The discussion focused on the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The third person pointed to passages in the Bible (our Old Testament) to help the two men understand the events of that weekend. The three people sat down to eat and when the third person took bread, blessed it and then distributed it, the other two people realized they had been talking to Jesus the whole time.

Jesus disappeared at that very moment but they knew they had seen Jesus, and could hardly wait to tell others about their experience. They did not miss the significance of the moment.

Receiving attention earlier this year was a photo of an actor standing in front of a building used in a television show in which he was a cast member. In the photo, the actor was standing in front of the building as others stopped to take pictures. They appeared to be so focused on the building that they failed to recognize who was standing next to them. They got a photo of the building, but they could have gotten a photo of one of the actors who made the building famous in the first place.

Think of how their story could have been altered if they had just recognized the actor! They missed the moment.

Think about the times we have missed the moment when it comes to Jesus. It may have been a time when we were too busy to recognize He was working. We may have been so focused on something else that we missed our moment with Jesus. Or we may have simply ignored Him, unwilling to put ourselves in direct contact with Him. We need to stop and look around and become aware of our moments with Jesus.
