NASHVILLE (BP) -- This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week's Bible study is adapted from the Bible Studies For Life curriculum.

Bible Passages: John 18:15-18, 25-27; 21:15-19

Discussion Questions: What are the different ways people respond to failure? How do we deal with the shame of repeated failure?

Food for Thought:

We all fail at one time or another. Failing is simply a part of being human; we just can't escape it. Sometimes we fail when we do something we don't realize is wrong. Other times, we fail because we know what is right, but we choose not to do it. We all fall short. We all sin. So the question isn't if we're going to fail, but what are we going to do about it when we fail.

This week's study focuses on the Apostle Peter and his failure to identify openly with Jesus on the night of His crucifixion. The pain of that failure most likely haunted Peter until the Lord restored him to fellowship and gave him a new mission.

We may tend to see the men and women written about on the pages of Scripture as "bigger than life" kind of people. But we are just as vulnerable to failing today as some of them were when they walked with Jesus. We've probably all said, "I'd never fail Jesus the way Peter did. I'd never deny knowing Him!" But that's easy to say. Who knows exactly how we might react if our life is on the line?

This week's lesson is titled "Hope Renewed" and focuses on the One Point that "When you fail, Jesus will restore you." The One Point is a unique feature in Bible Studies For Life, and it gives a laser focus to the lesson. This week's study will expose millions of adult group members to the truth that although they fail, Jesus is willing and quick to restore them! What a needed message in today's world. Failure isn't fatal. There is hope.
