Bible Study: April 20, 2014

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Bible Studies For Life curriculum.*

Bible Passage: 1 Corinthians 15:20-28

Discussion Questions: When you hear the word “victory,” what comes to mind? What does Christ’s resurrection offer me when I struggle with ongoing sin?

Food for Thought:

Super Bowl. The name implies something special, something extraordinary and something worth celebrating. It continually sets records: the largest live audience, the highest-priced commercials and the biggest star-studded half-time shows. The game itself testifies to hard work, preparation and a rugged battle for the win.

Easter is the Super Bowl of Sundays in the life of the church. On this day we celebrate a monumental event, something that changed history forever. Also called Resurrection Sunday, the name implies something different, something extraordinary and something worth celebrating. What makes this day truly special, however, is what leads us to celebrate each and every Sunday — the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Had it not been for His resurrection, we would still be in our sin.

Jesus’ victory over death makes this day different from any other. He was dead, but now is alive. We celebrate His victorious, risen life. His tomb is empty. Inside the tombs of Confucius, Buddha, Mohammed or any other religious leader lies a body. Not so with Jesus’ tomb. He is risen! In 1 Corinthians 15:20-28, Paul addressed the essential connection between Christ’s resurrection and the Gospel message. Jesus died for our sins, was buried and came back to life on the third day. That is the priceless message of Easter.

Jesus’ death and resurrection provide what we could not provide for ourselves — new life. We may struggle and battle with sin, but Christ has made victory possible. His death paid the price for our sin. Because of the resurrection, we can accept God’s gift of ultimate triumph over sin and live daily in victory. Now that’s worth celebrating!
