Bible Study: February 16, 2014

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Bible Passage: John 20:1-31

Discussion Questions: How does Mary’s response to the risen Christ compare to your response to Him? What are you doing to tell others about Him?

Food for Thought:

Austin sat in the airport trying to figure out how he knew the person sitting on the other side of the food court. He just couldn’t quite recall how he knew that person. He could have walked over to the man and asked, but that could be risky. Austin took a picture on his phone and sent it to a friend. The immediate response from the friend simply read: “Can you get his autograph for me?!” Once he realized who the man was, Austin scrambled to find paper and pen.

In John 20, Mary Magdalene returned to the tomb where Jesus had been laid after the crucifixion. She found the tomb empty and began searching for someone to help her find the body. The One she was seeking was the One she mistook for a gardener. Once she realized the gardener was Jesus, she responded by hanging on to Jesus with all she had. There really was no other appropriate response. Her instructions were clear — tell the disciples that she had seen Jesus.

While our encounters with Jesus are different than Mary’s encounter, the reality is the same — Jesus is alive. There are really only two ways we can respond to that news. First of all, we can reject it and keep searching. Ignoring and stalling are the same as rejecting. The second way is to embrace the truth of Jesus and tell everyone else about Him. Who He is demands more than a casual glance or a nod in recognition. He is the risen Savior who deserves our all.
