Bible Study: January 12, 2014

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Bible Studies For Life curriculum.

Bible Passage: Romans 8:8-17, 26-27

Discussion Questions: Who are some people you depend on? Why? If the Spirit lives within us, why is it sometimes so difficult to sense His presence? How would your life be different if you were more aware of the Spirit’s activity?

Food for Thought:

Jennifer was pacing and panicked. She searched everywhere — the nooks and crannies of her luggage, under her bed and mattress, in the pockets of her jeans. Her passport had vanished. This mission trip to Nicaragua had been a highlight of her life. Her church team, having hosted a week-long medical clinic and evangelistic services, was packing to head to the airport.

That’s when she realized her passport had been stolen. Fears rushed through her mind like uninvited guests. Would she be left alone in this foreign country? Would she be forced to remain in Nicaragua for weeks without anyone to help her?

People are often terrified by the notion of being left alone. This world can be a scary place without the companionship of others. In Romans 8, Paul reminds us that God will never leave us alone. As children in His family, He has provided His Holy Spirit to guide us and protect us. The Spirit is the One who empowers us to stand against sin, to walk righteously and to live every aspect of life for His glory.

In other words, we don’t have to fear being alone. We’re always in the presence of the One who knows us intimately and can provide whatever we need.
