Nev. Baptists increase CP

HENDERSON, Nev. (BP) — Nevada Baptists approved an increase in their Cooperative Program giving for worldwide mission causes during their 35th annual meeting at Green Valley Baptist Church in Henderson.

The meeting drew 130 messengers, representing 54 of the Nevada Baptist Convention’s 201 churches and missions. The theme of this year’s gathering was “What you do counts … Excel in the Lord’s Work,” based on 1 Corinthians 15:58.

Greg Fields, pastor of Nellis Baptist Church in Las Vegas, delivered the annual sermon. This year’s speakers also included Sam Crouch, president of the convention and pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Elko, and Mac Brunson, pastor of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla. Brunson brought the meeting’s keynote messages.

Nevada Baptists approved a $2,132,534 budget for 2014 during the Oct. 22-23 meeting. The budget includes an increase in Cooperative Program giving from 31 percent in 2013 to 35 percent for next year.

Within the 2014 budget there is a total representation of 9 percent allocated to church planting in Nevada. This raises total mission giving from the Nevada Baptist budget to a total of 44 percent combined. The budget is a 6 percent increase from the 2013 budget, with an 18.57 percent increase of projected undesignated income dollars from $700,000 to $830,000.

Messengers adopted four resolutions. Among them: Donna Campbell was honored for her 25 years of service to the convention. She is the webmaster for the convention, editor of the Nevada Baptist, and administrative assistant in the Church Planting/Missions department. She also has served in other administrative assistant roles and was the business office director.

Other resolutions voiced support for persecuted believers of the world and the biblical definition of marriage. Nevada voters have voted twice to amend the state’s constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, but that definition continues to face legislative and legal challenges.

Nevada messengers stand against “any attempts to redefine marriage apart from the definition set forth in scripture, as being between one man and one woman,” the resolution noted. It encouraged pastors and church leaders to “speak boldly about God’s direction on the issue,” and Nevada Baptists should contact their elected officials to express support for the biblical definition of marriage.

Both the president and vice president were re-elected to a second term: Sam Crouch, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Elko, and Greg Fields, pastor of Nellis Baptist Church in North Las Vegas, respectively.

Next year the convention will be held Oct. 21-22 at South Reno Baptist Church in Reno.
