Cal. Baptist granted NCAA Division II status

INDIANAPOLIS (BP) — The NCAA recently notified California Baptist University that it has completed the three-year membership process and now is an active Division II member.

In addition, the NCAA approved Union University and Shorter University for the third and final year of the membership process for Division II.

The announcements came after the NCAA Division II membership committee meeting July 9-11 in Indianapolis.

“I’m very thankful for all the people who helped us get through this process,” Micah Parker, CBU’s director of athletics said. “This really is a campus-wide achievement, not simply an athletic department achievement. It has been a tremendous learning opportunity for everyone involved and we are thrilled to be a part of the NCAA.”

CBU formally applied for Division II membership in the summer of 2010, and the recent announcement brings a successful completion to the standard three-year membership process. CBU progressed through each of the last three years, meeting all of the necessary standards set forth by the NCAA to achieve active status.

Union and Shorter still have one year left in their application process. The schools were two of nine institutions to move from candidacy year two into provisional status, which puts each of them on track to obtain NCAA Division II active status for 2014-15.

Though Union and Shorter are not eligible for NCAA postseason play until achieving active status, both schools will play a full Gulf South Conference schedule in all sports.
