Yeats’ nomination to be made by son

HOUSTON (BP) — Fort Worth pastor John Mark Yeats will nominate his father John L. Yeats for a 17th term as recording secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention at the June 11-12 annual meeting in Houston.

The son, pastor of Normandale Baptist Church, said his father remains the man for the job.

“As Southern Baptists, we benefit when leaders take what are often seen as thankless roles and fulfill them with excellence,” John Mark Yeats said. “I strongly believe that John L. Yeats continues to be the choice to serve our Southern Baptist churches as recording secretary.”

The longtime recording secretary “continues to build a track record of exceptional service during his 40-plus years of ministry,” his son said. “Known as a peacemaker who seeks to encourage churches in their Gospel responsibilities, Yeats continues to shine as a servant leader to our SBC churches.”

The senior Yeats was first elected SBC recording secretary in 1997 and, since 2011 has concurrently served as executive director of the Missouri Baptist Convention. He designed the annual meeting’s process of communicating from the convention floor to the platform and to the Order of Business Committee, an achievement credited with enhancing the accuracy of the official record.

The SBC recording secretary records proceedings of the Southern Baptist Convention, trains volunteers for convention business sessions and submits the final edit of the SBC Book of Reports and the SBC Annual. Yeats is an ex-officio member of the SBC Executive Committee and this past year, chaired the Executive Committee’s Administrative Subcommittee.

He has overseen communications and public policy for the Louisiana Baptist Convention and is a former editor of state Baptist papers in Oklahoma and Indiana. He has served churches in six states during 40-plus years of pastoral ministry.

He received an undergraduate degree from Dallas Baptist University, a master of divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, and a doctor of ministry degree from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo.

His wife Sharon serves beside him on the annual meeting platform. The couple live in Lohman, Mo., and have three sons and nine grandchildren.
