BIBLE STUDY: Sunday, April 29, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curriculum and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Explore the Bible curriculum.

Bible Passage: Luke 13:22—17:10

Discussion Question: What are some incidences in which you have seen wealthy people reveal their true heart for God through their generosity?

Food for Thought:

“Nearly every moment of every day we have the opportunity to give something to someone else — our time, our love, our resources,” Truett Cathy wrote in his 2002 book “Eat Mor Chikin: Inspire More People.” “I have always found more joy in giving when I did not expect anything in return.”

Using a business philosophy rooted in biblical principles, Cathy founded Chick-fil-A and uses his resources to support a long-term foster care program, a summer camp for more than 1,900 kids each summer, a scholarship program for Berry College, and marriage enrichment retreats. From Chic-fil-A’s beginnings in Hapeville, Ga., to the now-1,000-plus chain of stores nationwide (that are never open on Sundays), Cathy has used his resources in the development of young people. The Win-Shape Foundation, for example, grew from his desire to “shape winners” by helping young people succeed in life through scholarships and other support programs. The foundation awards scholarships for an average of 25 students per year to attend Berry College and also awards leadership scholarships to Chick-fil-A restaurant employees. Last year, the foundation awarded more than $1.9 million in scholarships to restaurant team members.

Cathy’s WinShape Foundation also has established the WinShape Homes program which operates foster care homes in three states and Brazil as well as WinShape Camps which are two-week residential summer camps to impact young people and families through experiences which enhance their Christian faith as well as their character and relationships.

Among the numerous successful business people across the United States, Truett Cathy is certainly a giant among them for his generous contributions to others based his deep love for Christ.
