HOUSTON (BP)–Ed Young, pastor of Second Baptist Church in Houston, is recovering from triple bypass surgery, Gary Moore, senior associate pastor of the church, told Baptist Press June 7.
Young, 73, was president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1992-94. He has led Second Baptist Church since 1978. The church now encompasses 54,000 members in five Houston-area locations.
Moore said Young was released from the hospital June 3 after undergoing the 90-minute surgery May 27.
“He came through beautifully and has made great progress since,” Moore said. “He’s expected to make a total recovery and be back [in the pulpit] as soon as doctors feel like it’s right thing to do.”
The need for bypass surgery after Young felt a tightness in his chest was a bit of a surprise, Moore said, because Young is “very disciplined, eats right and jogs all the time.”
