‘Fireproof’ passes $30M at box office

Updated with actuals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–“Fireproof” continued its impressive theatrical run in its eighth weekend, passing the $30 million mark — a significant accomplishment considering it cost only $500,000 to make — and staying in the top 15 in total gross.

The film, from the makers of the 2006 film “Facing the Giants,” also stayed in the top 10 in per-theater gross among all films showing in 100 or more theaters. It averaged $1,457, placing it at No. 9 in that category. It now has made three times that of Facing the Giants, which grossed $10 million.

Fireproof has finished in the top 10 on a per-theater average (among all movies showing on 100-plus screens) and the top 15 in total gross each weekend it’s been in theaters. It made $1.25 million over the weekend, good enough for No. 13 in weekend gross. It also was No. 13 in its seventh weekend.

Perhaps most impressively, it lost only 20.8 percent in weekend gross from the previous weekend, the smallest percentage drop among all top 20 films that have been in theaters more than one weekend. By comparison, “Eagle Eye,” which also has been in theaters eight weekends, lost 42.4 percent.

Fireproof has made $30.2 million in total gross since its Sept. 26 release. Its gross over the weekend was boosted by the fact that it opened in more than 80 new theaters.

The movie tells the story of how a firefighting captain played by Kirk Cameron works to save his failing marriage. “The Love Dare,” a book featured in the movie,” was No. 1 for three straight weeks on The New York Times’ paperback advice bestseller list and now is No. 2. It is published by B&H Publishing Group.

Fireproof was made by Sherwood Pictures, which is owned by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga.
