Criswell trustees lay rumor to rest

DALLAS (BP)–A rumor that Criswell College, started in 1975 by First Baptist Church of Dallas, would become part of nearby Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary was laid to rest by the college’s trustees during their regularly scheduled board meeting April 10.

As the college and the church continue to discuss their future relationship, some had suggested that Criswell College might become part of the seminary’s undergraduate program. That apparently was the motivation for the Criswell College trustees’ vote, which was without dissent, that the college would not become part of the seminary in the future.

Criswell President Jerry Johnson expressed optimism regarding the future of the college in a statement released to the Southern Baptist TEXAN.

“It’s exciting that Criswell College has developed so that we’re discussing our next step of growth,” he said. “We are looking forward to the ways God will continue to use Criswell College to train men and women for kingdom ministry.”

In other business, the trustees approved the promotion of three faculty to the rank of associate professor: Chauncey Everett Berry, Dennis Ray Burk and Joseph D. Wooddell. All three hold earned doctorates.

Also, the board granted the recommendation of an honorary doctorate to Dr. E. David Cook.
