RICHMOND, Va., (BP)–Maryland pastor Eric C. Redmond will be nominated for second vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention, a Virginia Baptist leader announced May 18.
Doyle Chauncey, executive director of the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia convention, said he will nominate Redmond for the post during the SBC’s June 12-13 annual meeting in San Antonio.
Redmond is pastor of the SBCV-affiliated Hillcrest Baptist Church in Temple Hills, Md.
Redmond previously was assistant professor of Bible and theology at Washington Bible College in Lanham, Md., and now is an adjunct professor of hermeneutics at Capital Bible Seminary, also in Lanham.
He is a trustee at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and an executive board member of the National African American Fellowship of the Southern Baptist Convention. He also is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society.
Redmond is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and Washington Bible College.
“I can think of no one more qualified or more capable for this vital role in our convention’s life than my friend, Eric Redmond,” Chauncey said. “Eric epitomizes both a scholarly pastor and a warmhearted evangelist in the church where he preaches for life change and in a neighborhood where he and his church actively reach lost people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
Chauncey said Redmond represents “the best of who faithful Southern Baptists are and what we have to offer in a part of our country where strong evangelical voices are seldom heard.” Chauncey also noted that Redmond and Hillcrest Baptist members utilize the FAITH Sunday School evangelism strategy, public Bible distributions and door-to-door witnessing “in efforts to tell others about new life in Christ.” In 2006, Hillcrest sponsored a new church start for the SBCV in College Park, Md.
Redmond and his wife Pamela are parents to five children.
Information for Hillcrest Baptist Church from Southern Baptists’ Annual Church Profile survey for the most recent year, 2006, lists 13 baptisms and primary worship service attendance of 400. The church gave $100,000, or 13.3 percent, through the Cooperative Program from total undesignated receipts of $751,400. According to the ACP, the church also received $100,000 for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions and $1,400 for the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions.
Redmond is the second announced nominee for SBC second vice president, joining evangelist Bill Britt, a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Gallatin, Tenn., and a former president of the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists.
