Southern Baptists called to pray for Turkmenistan

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (BP)–Southern Baptist workers are asking people to pray for the future of Turkmenistan following the sudden death of its president, who ruled the mostly Muslim nation for 21 years.

President Saparmurat Niyazov, 66, died Thursday of heart failure. Christian workers in the region fear riots could break out and basic functions of government could collapse if a new leader is not appointed within the coming days. But one worker hopes this time of uncertainty will usher in new opportunities for the Gospel to spread in a country where religious freedom and Christian work are nearly nonexistent.

“Pray that the people will have hope, and we know that this is impossible without Christ,” the worker said. “While the short term may be difficult, we have such a huge expectation that God is going to do something good that we can’t even comprehend or imagine.”
